This edition of "Because You Need More Books" is being blogged live from Portland, Oregon, the home of Powell's City of Books. This bookstore managed to live up to my high expectations (the Rare Book Room--le swoon) and I purchased The Silent Duchess and George Eliot's The Lifted Veil and Brother Jacob for $5.50--total. I then spent all the money I'd saved buying a pair of Brazilian bombshell heels at Imelda's. Mission accomplished.
Meanwhile, across the pond, writers list their favorite reads this year. (The Guardian)
